Conducting a successful youth missions trip requires extensive planning, effort, finances and prayer support. When the destination is overseas it becomes even more intense. Moline Baptist Church, the Leaders and the Teens rose to every challenge by trusting in God’s leading and promise to provide.
The planning phase included Youth Leaders Dan & Krista Rookus, Mark & Kathy Chesebro, Chris & Becky DeYoung and Joe & Christina Cappon. All the logistics were expertly handled by Tom & Kathy Werkema who have made the trip before and have local missionary and transportation contacts in Ecuador. The trip began with Elder discussion and approval back in June 2012. Tentative planning and communication with Ecuador contacts began in September and continued through to the trip in June 2013. Fundraisers, packing lists, flights, passports and a myriad of other details were considered and planned.
Many fundraisers were conducted to help raise the needed finances for the trip and reduce the costs to family, friends and the church. The Teens were quite successful with selling candy bars throughout the Fall of 2012. They held a Saturday Rake N Ride event, several spaghetti dinners, a car wash in Dorr, an upscale Valentine Banquette and church-wide garage sale. Pictures of several fundraising events are uploaded to the fundraising page.
The entire year-long process unified the youth group, bolstered spiritual growth and provided hands-on experience to numerous missionary jobs and tasks. The overall trip was exceedingly successful. We are grateful to everyone who sacrificed time, resources and offered fervent prayers. Though it would be difficult to mention everyone by name who helped make this trip a success we absolutely must recognize God and the power of his Holy Spirit who met every need and provided security and safety through every leg of the journey!
