Carolyn Koole:

Alpha is a pregnancy care center that brings the physical and spiritual resources of the community to bear on the needs of families facing unplanned pregnancy, poverty and homelessness.

Alpha was created in 1985 after the Roe v Wade decision that made abortion legal in America. Our center came as an outgrowth of the need for a safe place for pastors and doctors to send women considering abortion as an option for their pregnancy. It was also a safe place for these women to share their fears and concerns in an atmosphere of respect and genuine Christian love and compassion. Several churches came together to form Alpha with the administrative assistance of Baptists for Life (now Life Matters).

In 2012 Alpha had over 4,100 visits from members seeking assistance with pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, resources and education. We provided over 75,000 diapers, 2,500 cans of baby formula and well over 50,000 pieces of gently used clothing, furniture, etc., all donated by a caring community.

It takes over 100 volunteers each week to provide services for the members who come to us. Volunteers are mentors, inventory managers, clerical supporters and building maintainers.

Programs include but are not limited to:

  1. General pregnancy care
  2. Parenting
  3. Relationships
  4. Bible studies
  5. GED Prep
  6. Home Economics
  7. Life Planning – Setting goals
  8. ESL (new)

Our greatest needs this year:

  1. Paying off our mortgage
  2. Male and female mentors for GED
  3. ESL mentors and a lead teacher
  4. Mentors for our pregnancy care program
  5. Men to volunteer for a security team the hours we are open
  6. Monthly donors to stabilize our cash flow for ministry
